How to decorate an entryway console: sculptural objects for a minimalist foyer
The entrance of your home is the prelude to your personal space; it is the first impression that sets the tone of the entire interior architecture. However, it is common to see this space end up becoming a cluttered passageway. In my 35 years of craft as a ceramicist working alongside interior designers, I have found that to decorate an entryway console elegantly, the golden rule is restraint: fewer elements, but of greater visual stature.
The foyer is not a storage space, it's your private gallery
A sophisticated foyer requires intention. Instead of accumulating small generic ornaments that clutter the view, modern interior design bets on selecting one or two sculptural objects for the foyer. A console in fine wood, marble or minimalist metal doesn't need to be filled; it only needs a work of art with presence and texture that converses with the furniture and brings the space to life.

Minimalist centerpieces and the play of asymmetry
When placing objects on the console, the biggest mistake is strict symmetry. I suggest playing with asymmetry: placing minimalist centerpieces or a composition of tall stoneware vases at one end of the piece of furniture, balancing the visual weight with an off-center mirror or a painting on the opposite wall. The rough textures and glazes of handmade ceramics fired at 1200°C (2192°F) bring an organic warmth that contrasts beautifully with the straight lines of modern furniture.

The difference between an ornament and a studio piece
Placing a mass-produced piece at the entrance of your home is a missed opportunity to tell a story. When you choose studio ceramics, you are displaying a work that was thrown by hand, with glazes of its own formulation and marks of the process that make it unrepeatable. When you walk into your home, you and your guests won't see a simple vase; you will encounter a sculpture with an identity of its own.
