Handmade Ceramics in Buenos Aires — Stoneware Design Objects

Handmade ceramics in Buenos Aires has a problem: workshops abound, ceramicists with real craft are scarce. Fernando Durao has spent 35 years at the potter's wheel. His decorative vases and stoneware sculptures are fired at 1200°C (2192°F) with glaze formulas of his own, developed over decades of trial and error. The result is design objects with no equivalent in the local market — one-of-a-kind studio ceramic pieces, no series, never restocked.

Why stoneware is different

Not all ceramics are the same. Stoneware is a high-temperature clay body: denser, stronger, with a tactile presence that common ceramics cannot achieve. Fired at 1200°C (2192°F), the material vitrifies the clay body, gains weight and a characteristic resonance to the touch. It is the material serious ceramicists use. And it is the only material Fernando Durao uses.

The glazes that finish each piece are formulas of his own: combinations of oxides and minerals that produce matte, satin or glossy finishes impossible to replicate industrially. Each decorative vase is, in that sense, unrepeatable in its surface too.

Three collections of design objects

Fernando Durao's works are organized into three collections, each with its own visual identity:

Unikas Black — modern vases decorated in black, with brush-applied textures that create depth and movement on the surface. Pieces with a strong presence, ideal for interiors with a restrained palette where a single object defines the room.

Unikas Quartz — handmade ceramics in white with a quartz texture, a mineral finish and a rough feel. They work in minimalist spaces, in dialogue with natural materials such as wood, linen or stone. They are the design objects that architects and interior designers choose most often.

Moradores — abstract figures with a human form, halfway between sculpture and decorative object. One-of-a-kind stoneware pieces with an expressive charge that turns any corner into a space with a story.

Handmade Ceramics for Architects and Interior Designers

Many of Fernando Durao's clients are design and architecture professionals looking for studio ceramic pieces for high-end residential projects. Durao's works answer that need naturally: they don't follow passing decorative trends, they have studied proportions and a presence that integrates without competing with the architecture.

You can ask about full collections, specific sizes or pieces for particular spaces. Communication is direct: no middlemen, no gallery.

Minimalist decor: why a set of Unikas transforms a space

In minimalist decor, every object carries enormous weight. It is not about accumulating but about choosing with absolute precision. A set of Unikas vases in stoneware ceramic doesn't just fill a place: it creates a dialogue. By combining different heights and volumes in matte white or black, this trio of pieces organizes an entire room visually, introducing rhythm, texture and scale. That is what Fernando Durão's pieces achieve in the interiors they inhabit. They don't decorate — they define the space.
